Paul Robinson is baffled as to why Liverpool have not signed a centre-half this January.

The former England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, said the Premier League champions do not have enough quality in their squad to "stop the leak".

The Athletic's David Ornstein revealed on Monday that the Reds made an enquiry for Greece international Sokratis Papastathopoulos last week.

The defender was available as a free agent after his contract at Arsenal was terminated but he has since joined Olympiacos on a two-and-a-half year deal.

Jurgen Klopp's side have struggled in the absence of their three senior centre-halves - Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip in recent weeks.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on Liverpool's lack of transfer activity, Robinson said:

"I cannot understand for the life of me why they have not signed a centre-half.

"I've heard that they made contact with Sokratis and they need something to stop the gap.

"It is like a leak and they need something to stop the leak. Klopp just does not have the players to do that right now.

"I cannot understand why they did not sign a centre-half on 1 January. I thought they would have had one lined up.

"I understand not signing for the sake of signing but we are at the stage now where they are in desperate need of a centre-half hence the reason they were linked with Sokratis.”
