Joel Ekstrand is closing in on a short-term contract with Bristol City, according to a report.

The Bristol Post claim that the centre back will be confirmed by City next week, having been handed a trial with the club.

The report says that Ekstrand has been training with the first team squad since August 15th, and has persuaded Lee Johnson to offer him a contract.

Leeds were close to offering Ekstrand a deal in July, having been released by Watford at the end of the season but they were said to be worried about his injury record.

The Swedish defender would be returning to the league where he has been successful before and he played a key role in Watford's Championship promotion during the 2014-15 season where he featured in 25 encounters for the club.

That said, during the successful campaign Ekstrand suffered a cruciate ligament injury and did not feature for the club again before being released by the club this summer.

The 27-year-old defender was targeted by Leeds manager Garry Monk as another defensive option for the forthcoming Championship campaign, but he opted to sign Kyle Bartley instead.

However, club captain Sol Bamba quit the club on Thursday due to personal reasons and Monk might be looking to free agents for a fourth central defensive option.

In other Leeds transfer news, they sign a midfielder after terms are agreed.
