Leeds came within a whisker of signing Sergi Canos from Norwich on deadline day, according to a report.

The Daily Star claim the Yorkshire giants were close to landing the winger after holding "extensive talks" with his representatives about a transfer to Elland Road.

But Canos, 20, rejected a move to Leeds in favour of re-joining Brentford, where he had a fruitful spell on loan last season.

Leeds manager Garry Monk is said to be a big admirer of the Spain Under-19 international and was keen to push through a deal before the window shut on Tuesday night.

It has been reported elsewhere that Leeds preferred a loan move,  while Brentford eventually signed Canos on deadline day on a permanent deal for a fee of around £2.5million.

The Yorkshire giants brought in two wingers on loan in the final hours of the window, with Alfonso Pedraza joining from Villarreal initially until the end of the season and Modou Barrow arriving from Monk's former club Swansea for the remainder of the campaign.

The late double swoop has given Monk the attacking reinforcements he wanted ahead as Leeds aim to secure promotion to the Premier League.

The Championship's fourth-placed side make the short journey to Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield on Sunday lunchtime for a top-of-the-table encounter.
