Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott had an afternoon to forget after giving away a penalty in his side’s FA Cup fourth-round defeat against Plymouth Argyle.

The Merseyside giants fielded a reasonably strong side against the Championship club despite making a number of changes and leaving several stars at home.

After the two sides went in 0-0 at half-time, Elliott gave away a penalty on 53 minutes when the ball hit his hand inside the box.

Ryan Hardie stepped up to score the resulting spot-kick after sending Caoimhin Kelleher the wrong way.

Liverpool struggled to muster many chances after going behind and were unable to find an equaliser to keep their FA Cup hopes alive.

Arne Slot’s side registered just one shot on target before the final 10 minutes despite starting the game with Luis Diaz, Diogo Jota and Federico Chiesa in the forward positions.

Liverpool fans slam Harvey Elliott after Plymouth controversy

Liverpool fans have laid into Elliott after conceding the penalty and putting in a disappointing display at Home Park.

Many supporters have labelled the 21-year-old’s performance as “pathetic”, while others have called for the club to sell him.

Liverpool told to accept Harvey Elliott offer

Liverpool decided against strengthening their squad in the January transfer window following their strong performances this season.

Slot’s side came into the game against Plymouth top of the Premier League and still in every cup competition.

The defeat at Home Park has, however, ruined their chances of securing a historic quadruple this season.

Liverpool made it through to the Carabao Cup final earlier this week following their semi-final victory over Tottenham

They also automatically qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League after finishing top of the revamped league phase of the competition.

Finance expert Stefan Borson told Football Insider Liverpool are set for a record-breaking season financially following their on-field performances.
