Former Liverpool defender defender Lloyd Jones is poised to join Northampton Town on a free transfer, Football Insider can exclusively reveal.

The centre-back, 25, is a free agent after his Luton Town spell came to an end over the summer.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Jones is now set to reignite his career with a permanent move to Northampton.

He has agreed terms with the League One outfit and is now set for a medical to finalise the move.

The defender spent the second half of last season on loan at Northampton but was limited to seven appearances as the campaign was cut short due to the pandemic.

The former England Under-20 international has bided his time while waiting for offers over recent months.

He is set to be pitched straight into a relegation battle at Northampton, who are fighting to avoid an instant return to League Two.

The club are 21st out of the 24 teams in the English third tier with 19 of their matches played.

Jones is a product of the Liverpool academy and spent seven years at the club before joining Luton Town in January 2018.

Jones made just 14 appearances for the Hatters but was a regular starter as soon as he hailed to Northampton on loan in January.

Manager Keith Curle is convinced that 6ft 3in Jones can be an asset for him over the coming months.
