Liverpool are interested in signing Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah on a free transfer at the end of the season.

According to German outlet SZ, the 28-year-old's refusal to sign a new contract with the Bundesliga champions has alerted Arne Slot's side.

The Merseyside club are currently down a centre-back, failing to replace Joel Matip following his release at the end of last season.

Tah had been linked with a move to Bayern Munich throughout the summer transfer window, but a move failed to materialise after Xabi Alonso's side were reluctant to sell.

Liverpool eye Jonathan Tah to bolster defence

Tah captained Bayer Leverkusen to an invincible Bundesliga title last season, the first time in ten years a club other than Bayern Munich had won it.

An old school, no-nonsense centre-back, the Germany international won an impressive 72.1 per cent of his aerial duels across 31 league appearances last season.

Despite his refusal to sign a new deal, Alonso still regards him as a key member of his side with the defender starting and finishing both of their Bundesliga games so far this season.

Tah also recently starred in Germany's 5-0 demolition of Hungary in their UEFA Nations League Group A game on Saturday (September 7).
