Liverpool PSR update emerges after summing spending spree

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Liverpool’s owners could provide the cash for new signings in January if they decide to strengthen their squad again.

Liverpool will be without Alexander Isak for a couple of months, while questions are still being asked about Mohamed Salah’s future.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “They have got capacity on PSR. That isn't their issue.

“I think when you get to it, it's almost like the City situation. There's sort of three levels to it. There's one, the PSR issue. There's two, having the cash to actually pay for it. And there's three, whether you want to do it just in terms of prudent management of your business.

“I think for Liverpool, they can probably find the cash. If they've not got it, their shareholders will probably stump up the cash or they could probably borrow, so I don’t think there’s a cash issue. It's not a PSR issue or a Uefa restriction issue probably.”

What Liverpool will be considering amid January transfer plans

Borson revealed what the likely thought process will be at Liverpool as they consider bringing in new signings for the second half of the campaign.

“It's probably just a case of whether they look at it and go, ‘Well, we've spent £450m in the summer. We just need to be cautious now for this next phase or wait until the summer’,” said Borson.

“Or whether they think, ‘Well, look, we've gone this far. We've got this injury with Isak. We've got a situation with Salah that's gone a bit sour. We really need that additional investment to get us through to the end of the season’.

“That's going to be the business decision more than anything, whether they just act a little bit less prudently than maybe they have in the past.”

Liverpool’s next fixture sees them take on Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium on Thursday (8 January).
