Man United have accepted they may have to sell Rasmus Hojlund for less than his book value as uncertainty around the striker's future continues.

The Danish international has struggled for goals as the club's first choice centre-forward since joining from Atalanta two years ago in a deal worth up to £72million [BBC Sport].

Amid the striker's struggles in a side that performed well below-par last season, it was suggested that senior figures at Man United are starting to lose patience with Hojlund.

As a result, it now looks as though the Red Devils could be ready to take a significant financial loss on the 22-year-old as they attempt to raise funds in the transfer window.

Rasmus Hojlund linked with Napoli move

In public, Hojlund has insisted that he wants to stay at Old Trafford beyond the summer transfer window and into next season.

Despite that, Serie A champions Napoli have been linked with the Man United striker, and the price they might have to pay to sign him has now emerged.

According to a new update from The Athletic, clubs are in contact with the Red Devils over the potential signing of the Denmark international.

Should an exit happen, the Old Trafford outfit would apparently prefer to sell Hojlund, giving them a more immediate cash injection than a loan.

However, Man United are apparently also aware that if they were to sell the striker, they may have to do so for less than his book value of just under £45million, which could impact their PSR situation.

Man United update a damning reflection

Football Insider Verdict

It seems as though the decision makes at Old Trafford are having to go to some extreme lengths to move players on this summer.

There have already been claims that Man United may have to cover the wages of the likes of Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho if they are to leave the club.

Now it appears as though they may have to take a financial hit on Hojlund as well, raising further questions about why these players were signed, and how much money was spent on them.

Indeed, at a time when the club need to improve their squad while working under financial pressure, this is probably one of the last things they need.

Even so, with Man United having already signed Matheus Cunha from Wolves, and with other strikers being linked, it could be hard for Hojlund to get game time next season.

So from his perspective, it could be best for his career to try and put this ill-fated spell at Old Trafford behind him sooner rather than later.
