Newcastle United still have Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi 'on their radar' and could sign him for a reduced price in January, sources at the club have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O’Rourke revealed that Newcastle are seeking to take advantage of the 24-year-old's contract situation as talks with Crystal Palace stall.

Guehi's deal at Palace is due to expire at the end of next season, and there is no sign of him putting pen to paper on a new deal at the South London club anytime soon.

Eddie Howe is understood to be a big fan of the central defender, with Newcastle having four bids rejected throughout the summer transfer window.

Newcastle aren't putting all their eggs in one basket this time, however, and will explore potential deals for Leicester's Wout Faes or RB Leipzig's Castello Lukeba if a move for Guehi doesn't materialise.

Newcastle still keen on Marc Guehi deal

With current first-choice centre-backs Jamaal Lascelles and Sven Botman ruled out until at least January after suffering devastating ACL injuries in back-to-back games at the end of last season, Newcastle are seriously lacking depth in the position.

Dan Burn and Fabian Schar have been adequate cover, but beyond them, only Sweden international Emil Krafth is the only natural central defender in the squad.

Guehi has played every minute for Crystal Palace so far this season as they sit in 18th with just three points from their opening seven Premier League games.

Oliver Glasner's side is one of four Premier League teams, alongside Wolves, Southampton, and Ipswich Town, yet to secure their first win, having drawn three and lost four.

Newcastle, on the other hand, are fairing slightly better, placed in seventh with 12 points from their opening seven league games but are winless in their last three.
