McAvennie excited by Celtic agreeing Shaw deal after what he's heard from Pulis

Frank McAvennie is excited by new Celtic signing Liam Shaw after ex-Sheffield Wednesday boss Tony Pulis gave the player a glowing reference.

However, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Hoops and St Mirren striker suggested the 19-year-old's arrival is not enough to sell season tickets for next season.

Neil Lennon announced on Tuesday that the Scottish Premiership champions had signed the versatile midfielder on a pre-contract ahead of the summer.

Shaw has made 16 appearances across all competitions for Sheffield Wednesday this season.

Pulis told the Daily Record that the player he coached at Hillsborough last year is a "terrific signing" for the Hoops.

When asked for his initial thoughts on Shaw's arrival, McAvennie told Football Insider:

"It is exciting to hear but Lenny is saying he is one for the future. That is not what the fans want and they need to sell season tickets for next season.

"I do not know the boy but I like Tony Pulis and if he is saying Shaw is a talent then he is a talent.

"He is coming up here to put himself in the shop window for three of four years and then he will probably go back to England. That is what he will want.

"Apparently he can play in defence or midfield so he could be a smart signing.

"I do not think Lenny was pulling the strings for this one."
