Newcastle United are starting to see some tension behind the scenes as they search for a breakthrough in the transfer window.

Eddie Howe and his side enjoyed a remarkable season in 2024/25, winning the League Cup and qualifying for the Champions League.

That of course means they will need to add to their squad in the market in order to cope with the extra demands of European football in the coming campaign.

In recent years, PSR has been a problem for the Magpies, restricting their ability to recruit, and even forcing Newcastle to sell the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson last summer.

This summer, those financial issues ought not to be as much of an issue at St James' Park, although that has not led to an immediate influx of new additions to the first-team squad.

In the lead up to the summer, there had been claims that Newcastle wanted to take revenge in the transfer window now that concerns around PSR have been reduced.

Despite that, the Magpies are so far yet to make a senior signing in the market, although that is not for the want of trying.

Newcastle look to have missed out to Man United in the race to sign Bryan Mbeumo, after the attacker enjoyed an excellent season with Brentford.

There are questions around their pursuit of other signings as well, with Howe's side apparently unwilling to pay over the odds for Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford, who has been linked for some time.

Now, a new update from The Athletic has stated that as fans grow more worried about the lack of signings, there is also internal frustration about that situation at the club.

Even so, Newcastle are apparently confident that fees will become more affordable for them as the summer goes on, and they would prefer to wait for that rather than rush into the wrong deals.

They are apparently also ready to act when the right signings come along, and are optimistic the squad will be stronger at the end of the window than it is now.

Fans are always going to be disappointed when their club are not making signings while the window is open, especially if their rivals are.

However, it is still in the very early stages of the summer, with the main window for signings not due to open until Monday (16 June).

That ensures there is still plenty of time for Newcastle to make the signings they need, and everything suggests they are in a position to get those deals done.

With what they are able to offer in terms of playing in the Champions League and an expectation to challege for trophies, they ought to be an attractive proposition for plenty of their targets.

All of that means this can still become a productive and exciting window for those connected with the St James' Park club.

If that does prove to be the case, then after what they produced with a limited squad in 2024/25, Newcastle should once again be a major threat in the coming campaign.
