Newcastle United may offer Kieran Trippier the captain's armband in a bid to seal a deal for the Atletico Madrid defender this month.

That is the view of former Spurs and England number one Paul Robinson, speaking exclusively to Football Insider about the latest on the Magpies' move for the 31-year-old.

According to Sky Sports (1 January), Newcastle have submitted a formal bid to sign Trippier.

Newcastle

Eddie Howe is keen to recruit the England international he previously managed while in charge of Burnley.

The right-back has 18 months left on his contract in the Spanish capital.

When asked by Football Insider if Trippier is worth the £120,000-a-week, Robinson said: "I think he's worth every penny because he is a top player.

"Kieran Trippier is a right-back and left-back and a wing-back all rolled into one. He is so versatile. In my opinion, he has a lot to give at the top level still.

"I would be very surprised if Newcastle were able to pull off a permanent deal. That'd be amazing.

Newcastle

"For him to be attracted to Newcastle, there would have to be financial rewards. For example, a massive bonus if they stay in the Premier League.

"They may possible give him the armband as well. They need leaders and they need experience."
