Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted star striker Alexander Isak will be the first Newcastle United player to be handed a bumper new contract by the club.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – admitted the Magpies will have to keep an eye on their spending to ensure they remain within the profit and sustainability rules.

Football Insider revealed on 13 May that Isak’s impressive form this season has led to “huge” interest from other clubs in signing the Swedish international this summer.

The Tyneside club are expected to sell one of their star player once the transfer window reopens to raise funds for new signings while remaining within the Premier League’s financial rules.

Football Insider previously revealed Arsenal have been told a £100million bid for the 24-year-old would likely be accepted.

Alexander Isak new contract to be Newcastle priority

Wyness believes Newcastle will look to offer Isak a new contract to keep him at the club, with his current deal set to expire in 2028.

He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “Isak may be the first to be handed a new contract, from what I hear.

“I think we’ll have to wait and see if Trippier is going to be a priority near the top of the list.

“They also have to keep an eye over their shoulder about PSR as well. There is a certain limit they have to work within, so I think they will be quite selective.

“It could be the age of the players. They will look at the squad in general.

“They have suffered immensely from injuries this year, but there is still a very strong squad there if they can get players back fit.”
