Newcastle United could be active in the January transfer window as they look to improve their squad for the second half of the season.

Newcastle drew 2-2 against Chelsea on 20 December, leaving them sitting 11th in the Premier League table.

Meanwhile, Eddie Howe’s side are looking to reach the knock-out rounds of the Champions League to provide their financial situation with a further boost.

A Companies House submission on 18 December revealed Newcastle’s owners have injected £45million into the club in the form of a new share issue, with the January window opening next week.

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has invested regularly in Newcastle since securing its £305m takeover in October 2021.

PIF could put more cash into Newcastle after £45m reveal

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider Newcastle are going to be looking at potential signings once the January window opens.

The Magpies are still competing on all fronts this season, having reached the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating Fulham 2-1 last week at St James’ Park.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, Borson said: “I assume they're not going to be selling in January, so I think they are likely to look at potential buys in January given the situation that happened late in the window.

“I do think they've got available cash for the initial payments on these players.

“But likewise, it would be easy for the Newcastle owners to put more money in as they go forward into January knowing what's coming in the second half of the season.”

Newcastle have a strong chance of progressing in the Champions League as they currently sit 12th in the table, with the top eight qualifying automatically for the last 16 and ninth to 24th taking part in a play-off.

Newcastle set for financial boost after Champions League reveal

Borson revealed Newcastle’s progress in the Champions League could impact how much more cash their owners need to inject at St James’ Park this season.

“There’s a little bit more variance potential in the second half,” said Borson.

“You'd think that they probably budgeted for round of 16 maybe in the Champions League if they were being prudent, so I would think there is some possibility of a bit of upside there. Can they get to the quarters? Could they get to the semis?

“Obviously, if they could manage to do that, they'd outperform on the cash side a little bit, just in terms of the prize money that's coming from Uefa. That might minimise the amount of money that the owners need to put in in the second half of the season.

“Other than that, I think they'll know with a good level of clarity as to the money that needs to be put in in the second half of the year, if any.”

Newcastle’s next fixture sees them take on Man United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day (26 December).
