Pundit thrilled by Tottenham source's update after Leandro Trossard deal triggered
Noel Whelan has claimed Tottenham could yet seal the signing of Leandro Trossard in January as Brighton are a "selling club".
The former Leeds striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, insisted the 28-year-old would be a "good fit" at Spurs with Heung-min Son "not at it" in the 2022-23 season.
Sources told this site on Monday (9 January) that Tottenham have seen a verbal offer for Trossard knocked back by Brighton.
The Seagulls have reportedly triggered a one-year extension clause in the winger's contract, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2023-24 season.
The Belgium international has notched seven goals and three assists in 16 appearances for the Premier League high-flyers this season.
Brighton have sold Marc Cucurella, Yves Bissouma, and Ben White for big-money fees in the last two seasons - a policy which Whelan claimed could work in Spurs' favour.
He told Football Insider’s Ewan Kingsbury: “I think he’d be a good fit.
“He’s having a tremendous season.
“He has hit the forefront for Brighton this season. He’s been a standout from the word go, scoring big goals against big teams.
“When you look at the frontline of Tottenham – Son hasn’t been at it, Richarlison has been out injured a lot.
“You can never have enough options in that forward line.
“Trossard is very rarely injured and he plays the right style for Spurs – he’s quick, he likes the ball on the deck, he can score.
“Brighton will be reluctant to let him go, but we know that they’re a selling club.
“That’s how they generate the funds to keep themselves alive and competitive in the Premier League.”
