Rangers are set to announce Jermain Defoe as their first January signing after agreeing personal terms with him, Football Insider understands.

Steven Gerrard's side have been working to convert the loan contract of the striker, 37, into a full-time deal ahead of it expiring in the summer.

Ibrox sources have told Football Insider that Defoe has agreed to quit parent club Bournemouth and join Rangers full-time as he looks to finish his glittering career in Glasgow.

Football Insider revealed in the middle of last month that the Light Blues had opened talks to sign Defoe on a permanent deal.

Steven Gerrard explained at his media conference yesterday that a deal is firmly on the cards as he revealed the club are working on the "final details" of the transfer.

Rangers have been paying a major portion of Defoe's Bournemouth contract, which is said to be worth in excess of £100,000-a-week.

That expires in June and the former England forward is set to sign with Gerrard's side until the summer of 2021.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has knocked back the chance to recall Defoe from his loan this month, just as he did last summer.

Defoe is equal-second in the SPL scoring charts - behind only Odsonne Edouard - with 12 strikes this season, averaging a goal every 69 minutes.

In all competitions he has netted 16 times from 28 matches and his overall record for Glasgow giants is 24 from 48 appearances.

In other Rangers news, it can be REVEALED that an Ibrox mid-20s ace is close to agreeing personal terms with English north-west club after talks this week.
