Roberto Firmino may sign a new two-year contract at Liverpool, according to Gabby Agbonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the ex-Aston Villa and England attacker insisted Firmino still has a major role to play at Anfield despite the arrival of Darwin Nunez.

As quoted by Sky Sports earlier this week (11 July), Jurgen Klopp revealed that the 30-year-old is "100 per cent" fit after his injury struggles in 2021-22.

He also revealed sporting director Julian Ward is still "busy" despite Liverpool being unlikely to complete any more signings.

Firmino has now entered the final 12 months of his contract.

Football Insider reported earlier this year (12 February) that the Reds were lining up a contract offer for the Brazilian.

"I do like Firmino," Agbonlahor told Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley.

"He doesn't score as many goals as he should do because he's a very good finisher and a very good player. He was unlucky last season.

"Losing Origi, Minamino, Liverpool have to have options and they have to keep Firmino.

"Nunez isn't going to play every game, Firmino is going to be second choice in that position but he's someone you need around the squad.

"There are so many games to play, there are so many competitions and Liverpool take them seriously. There's a lot of football to be played.

"His contract could be [looked at]. Maybe a short extension, a year extension, I could imagine."

Firmino has scored 98 times and provided 74 assists in 327 games across all competitions for Liverpool.

He only managed 35 appearances in 2021-22, including just 17 starts.
