Robinson backs West Brom to complete bargain Longstaff signing
Paul Robinson has backed West Brom to sign Newcastle United midfielder Matty Longstaff on loan.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and England number one said the 21-year-old would be a "very smart" addition to Valerien Ismael's squad.
Longstaff has been a bit-part player for Steve Bruce's side since he put pen to paper on a new two-year contract extension last August.
According to Chronicle Live (23rd June), both the player’s representatives and Bruce believe the midfielder needs regular first team football next season.
West Brom are joined by Anderlecht, Norwich City and Middlesbrough in the race to take Longstaff on loan for a year.
When asked by Football Insider if Longstaff would be a welcome addition at The Hawthorns, Robinson said: "I think Longstaff is a very good player.
"If they can get him on loan it could be a brilliant signing. It would be a cheap signing as well because they would just have to pay his wages and a small fee.
"He is a combative player and someone who West Brom could do with in the midfield next season. It is an area they need to strengthen in because they've lost Okay Yokuslu and Ainsley Maitland-Niles."
A product of Newcastle's academy, Longstaff has scored three goals in his 20 appearances for his boyhood club.
He has one year remaining on his contract at St. James' Park.
