Man United could "bridge the gap" to Manchester City with the signing of Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane, according to Paul Robinson.

The former Spurs and England number one, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed the 28-year-old is the "world-class partner" club captain Harry Maguire needs at the back.

Sky Sports revealed on 13th July that United are negotiating personal terms with Varane ahead of a potential move from the Bernabeu.

It is said that the France international is open to moving to Old Trafford after entering the final 12 months of his contract in Madrid.

Robinson said Varane's signing would be a real statement of intent from Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer's side heading in to the 2021-22 campaign.

"Manchester United have to sign players like that if they want to bridge the gap and challenge Manchester City for the title next season," he told Football Insider's Dylan Childs.

"I'm still not convinced by them. I still think they have a lot of work to do in midfield and defence.

"They are a way behind City with their current squad even though they produced a few results that surprised people last season.

"They need a world class partner for Maguire and for that reason Varane would be a very good signing for them.

"It shows the level that United are wanting to compete at. Players like that would show real intent."
