Southampton have cooled their interest in Sunderland striker Ross Stewart and will now pursue alternative targets, sources have told Football Insider.

The Saints are in the market for a prolific striker this summer as they fear losing Che Adams to the Premier League with less than 12 months remaining on his current deal.

Football Insider revealed on Monday (31 July) that Everton, Wolves and Bournemouth have a genuine interest in Adams.

Stewart is someone who has attracted a lot of interest this summer - including from Premier League newcomers Luton and a host of Championship sides.

He has proved to be a regular and capable goalscorer since joining Sunderland in January 2021.

However, the Scotland international remains out following Achilles surgery - a factor which may have put off interested clubs.

He managed 10 goals and three assists in 13 Championship games last season before picking up the season-ending injury in February.

The former St Mirren and Ross County hitman has averaged a goal every two games since joining Sunderland.

Stewart was believed to be high on the list of Southampton - but they will turn their attention elsewhere with the new season just days away.

Southampton kick off the Championship season with an away clash against Sheffield Wednesday on Friday (4 August).

They have completed deals for Shea Charles and Ryan Manning so far this summer.
