Rangers have been struck by another major blow in their bid to appoint a director of football, according to a report.

The Mail claim Huddersfield recruitment guru Stuart Webber has become the second man to reject an approach from the Scottish giants.

It is said that Webber, who is Huddersfield's head of football operations, has decided to stay at the English Championship promotion hopefuls as they chase a passage into next season's Premier League.

It has also been widely reported in the last few days that Ross Wilson, the Southampton head of recruitment and scouting, has turned down Rangers after holding extensive talks with the club.

The Scottish Sun claim that the Wilson contacted Ibrox managing director Stewart Robertson on Monday to deliver the news that he was no longer interested in the position.

Webber had been identified by Rangers as an alternative option as a result of his track record at Huddersfield, who are third in the Championship and have hopes of automatic promotion.

He took over when the Terriers were languishing near the bottom of the Championship and has overseen a transformation after appointing German David Wagner as manager and overhauling the club's scouting operation.

Rangers are restructuring their entire management set-up as they look to replace ex-manager Mark Warburton, David Weir and Frank McParland. Ironically, Webber, 32, was the former director of recruitment at the Liverpool academy when McParland was in overall charge of managing the youth set-up at the Premier League giants.

It means that the Rangers board will need to go back to the drawing board in fill the director of football post.

The Scottish Sun report that the club could turn to Tottenham head of recruitment Paul Mitchell, who has been placed on gardening leave after handing in his resignation at the club last August.

Rangers chiefs have sanctioned a complete revamp of the club's football activities following a wretched campaign in which they have failed to offer any challenge to bitter rivals Celtic.

The Light Blues are 33 points adrift of the runaway Scottish league leaders, who are closing in on a sixth consecutive title.

The Glasgow rivals will go head to head on Sunday when they face one another in the Old Firm derby at Parkhead, with Brendan Rodgers' side the strong favourites to extend their remarkable winning sequence.
