Nottingham Forest have agreed a deal to sign former Crystal Palace midfielder Cheikhou Kouyate on a free transfer, sources have told Football Insider.

The 32-year-old is headed to the City Ground for a medical and to put the finishing touches to the deal.

Kouyate is a free agent after failing to agree a new deal with Palace earlier in the summer.

Forest have made a move for Kouyate as they look to add some experience and steel to their squad after a chastening opening day defeat to Newcastle United.

Sources told Football Insider earlier this week (9 August) that the club and player were in advanced negotiations and an agreement has now been reached.

Forest have now swooped in to offer him the chance to continue playing in England and he will offer them vast Premier League experience after his spells with Palace and West Ham.

He has played 258 games in the top flight, scoring 14 goals and providing a further 14 assists.

The Daily Mail reported earlier this summer (1 July) that the Senegal international, who can also operate at centre-back, wanted a two-year deal to extend his stay at Selhurst Park.

After their 2-0 away loss to Newcastle last week (6 August), Forest welcome West Ham to the City Ground on Sunday (14 August).

Kouyate will not be able to face his former club after missing the 12pm cut-off on Friday (12 August).
