Aston Villa are close to another big-name signing after agreeing a £22million fee with Everton for Lucas Digne, Football Insider has learned.

This site revealed earlier on Monday (10 January) that the Midlands giants were close to landing the left-back after submitting an offer.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Villa have now had a bid for Digne, 28, accepted by Everton and he has been given the green light to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms.

It is believed the initial £22m fee will be topped up by performance-related add-ons.

The Midlands giants announced the loan-to-buy capture of Philippe Coutinho from Barcelona last Friday (7 January).

That deal can become permanent in the summer for a fee of £33m.

The Digne transfer won't have the potential to reach that sum but will not be far off.

Everton had asked for £30m for the Frenchman, who joined from Barcelona in the summer of 2018.

Villa initially discussed loan and loan-to-buy options but Everton have been adamant over a permanent deal.

Manager Rafael Benitez has made it publicly clear there is no future for the defender at Goodison Park following a fall-out behind the scenes.

Digne has made 13 league appearances for Everton this season but has not figured since the 4-1 defeat to Liverpool on 1 December.

The full-back is now set to leave Goodison Park after making 129 appearances for the club.
