Everton have told Crystal Palace they will seal the signing of midfielder James McCarthy if they offer another £2million for him, Football Insider understands.

Crystal Palace have submitted an £8million bid for the Republic of Ireland international and are confident they can agree personal terms with him.

An Everton source has told Football Insider that manager Marco Silva has given the green light for McCarthy to be sold, but they are holding out for their £10million valuation to be met.

Palace must now decide whether to return to the negotiating table to secure the signing of McCarthy, following pressure from Roy Hodgson for the club to strengthen the squad before the window shuts.

The central midfielder has made just one Premier League appearance in 18 months after suffering a broken leg in January of last year.

McCarthy couldn't force his way back into the team at the end of last season and he has failed to climb the pecking order in Silva's side amid growing competition for places.

Everton converted Andre Gomes' season-long loan into a £22million permanent transfer earlier in the window and completed the £10million signing of Fabian Delph from Manchester City at the start of the week.

Everton expect interest in McCarthy from other lower Premier League clubs, given that he has accumulated 223 appearances in the competition.

The 41-times international signed for Everton for £13million from Wigan Athletic in the summer of 2013.
