Newcastle have agreed a £33.5million fee with Lyon for defensive midfielder Bruno Guimaraes, Football Insider understands.

The 24-year-old Brazilian is expected to undergo a medical in Brazil on Wednesday while on international duty.

A Newcastle source has told Football Insider that their bid of £33.5m has been accepted by French outfit Lyon and they are now hopeful of making Guimaraes their latest January signing.

There are still some hurdles to overcome, including personal terms, before there is a full agreement.

It would be a huge boost for the club if a deal can be done following a difficult two weeks in the transfer market.

The Magpies' pursuit of Sevilla's Diego Carlos and Manchester United's Jesse Lingard has proved so far unfruitful.

Talks over a loan deal for Lingard have stalled due to Man United demanding a sizeable loan fee for their player.

While negotiations over the permanent signing of Diego Carlos have been hindered by Sevilla's ever-increasing price tag.

Both players are open to moving to St. James' Park before next Monday's deadline.

In Guimaraes, Newcastle would be signing one of Ligue 1's most sought after midfielders.

The 3-times Brazil international is also said to be of interest to Arsenal and Juventus.

Guimaraes has provided six assists in 25 appearances across all competitions this season.

His contract with Lyon runs until the summer of 2024.

He would become Newcastle's third signing of the January window following the arrivals of Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood.
