Chelsea still plan to offer Ian Maatsen a long-term new contract despite his recent struggles for playing time, sources have told Football Insider.

The 21-year-old has recently seen his deal extended after the Blues activated a one-year clause in his current agreement, which now runs until June 2025.

But it is believed Chelsea are keen to protect their asset by tying him down to a longer-term deal.

Maatsen enjoyed a successful loan at Burnley last season as they were promoted back to the Premier League, notching four goals and six assists in 42 appearances across all competitions.

He rejected a deadline-day permanent move to Turf Moor after the Clarets saw a bid accepted, instead choosing to try and force his way into the Chelsea first-team.

However, the Netherlands Under-21 international has made just two starts in nine total appearances this season.

Maatsen has recently spoken out about "keeping his options open" as Chelsea try to tie him down to a longer-term contract.

He hinted at having to make a "difficult decision" in the near future if his lack of first-team action continues.

The youngster impressed Pochettino during pre-season, catching the eye with performances at left-back, on the wing and in a playmaker role.

But the likes of Cole Palmer and Raheem Sterling have been in top form in recent weeks, closing the door to Maatsen playing in a more advanced role.

The resurgence of Marc Cucurella at Stamford Bridge has also been a factor in the starlet's lack of action.

Chelsea, who sit 10th in the Premier League, are next in action against Newcastle on Saturday (25 November).
