Leeds United have opened talks with Mateusz Klich over a new and improved contract, Football Insider can reveal.

The Poland international, 29, has become a key player in Marcelo Bielsa's side but has entered the final year of his current deal, signed when he joined United 2017.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider the club are keen to tie Klich down to a long-term deal and avoid losing him on a free at the end of the season.

This comes after Football Insider revealed in July that the Yorkshire giants were ready to open talks with Klich over a new agreement.

Klich was the subject of interest from clubs in England and overseas during the summer window but has established himself as a key player for club and country over the last 12 months.

The central midfielder has started all six of Leeds' Championship matches this season after being a mainstay of the side last campaign, when he remarkably started all 48 of Leeds' league and play-off games.

He also earned his 20th international cap in Poland's 2-0 Euro 2020 qualifier defeat to Slovenia on Friday night.

The international ace is a regular scorer and creator from midfield, netting 10 goals and supplying nine assists from his 48 games last season.

As revealed by Football Insider, Klich was among the internationals and new signings who have been left behind at Thorp Arch to work on their fitness rather than join the rest of the squad on the pre-season tour of Australia.
