Liverpool will accept an offer of around £15million for Ibrahima Konate in January if they can sign a replacement, sources have told Football Insider.

Marc Guehi was extremely close to becoming a Liverpool player in the summer, and a strong interest in the defender remains at Anfield.

But Real Madrid and Bayern Munich have registered their interest in the England international, and whispers grow that Manchester City will make a move.

Konate's Liverpool future is in serious doubt, with the Frenchman's contract at Anfield set to expire next summer.

If the Reds can pull off a move for Guehi in January, however, decision-makers at Anfield would be willing to see Konate depart.

Defensive issues at the forefront for Liverpool

Arne Slot is under intensifying pressure at Liverpool, with the Reds facing a dreadful period of form.

Several big-money signings arrived in the summer, with the failure to sign Guehi the only real negative of what was a record-breaking transfer window.

Recent months have revealed that Liverpool would have been best-minded to have paid more attention to the defence, however.

Giovanni Leoni suffered an injury to his anterior cruciate ligament in September, leaving just Konate, Joe Gomez and Virgil van Dijk to feature in the centre of defence.

But the former has experienced a significant drop off in form, making several mistakes already this season.

Some Liverpool fans are even calling on Konate to be sold - a dramatic shift in attitude that underlines just how poor the defender has been.

Marc Guehi ambition to be tested amid interest elsewhere

Guehi has been outstanding for Crystal Palace this season, with the Eagles in an impressive fifth after 14 fixtures.

There were some suggestions that the drama of transfer deadline day could have knocked the defender off kilter, but the 25-year-old shrugged off the events remarkably quickly.

With Guehi also performing on the international stage, the former Chelsea man's prospects are growing by the week.

Liverpool may well have had his word in the summer, but the Reds will now face significant competition should they attempt to return for the centre-back.

Interest from Real Madrid would be a cruel twist, with the Spanish giants also reportedly sharing the blame for Konate's decision not to sign a new contract.
