Tottenham are confident of completing the signing of Bologna defender Takehiro Tomiyasu next week, Football Insider understands.

Spurs have been in pursuit of the versatile defender, 22, during the last month but put it on hold while Japan competed in the Olympics.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the club are back in talks and are increasingly hopeful of coming to an agreement soon.

That would be a £1.5m uplift on their previous bid and the hope from the club is it will secure a breakthrough in discussions.

Managing director Fabio Paratici has already agreed personal terms with the player and is negotiating the structure of the deal.

Should an agreement be secured, Tomiyasu would become Spurs' fourth major signing of the summer.

He would follow loan-to-buy captures Cristian Romero and Pierluigi Gollini, as well permanent signing Bryan Gil.

Strengthening in defence has been a priority for Tottenham this summer, especially at centre-back.

That is Romero's position, while Tomiyasu can slot in at either centre-back or at right-back.

He also has extensive experience of playing in a three-man defence as well as an orthodox back four.

Tomiyasu has played 63 times for Bologna since joining for a £9million fee from Belgian top-flight side Sint-Truidense in the summer of 2019.
