Man United missed out on top defensive target Benjamin Pavard due to Harry Maguire's reluctance to leave the club, sources have told Football Insider.

Maguire was in advanced talks to join West Ham in a big-money deal earlier this month before those discussions collapsed.

Maguire's contract at Old Trafford is set to expire in June 2025.

It is believed Man United will only be able to move for reinforcements this week if they can first sell their unwanted stars.

Football Insider revealed earlier this month (19 August) that Ten Hag's side are still keen to sign a defender and midfielder before the transfer deadline.

Alongside Maguire, Scott McTominay is another player seen as surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have already spent big this summer – adding Mason Mount, Andre Onana and Rasmus Hojlund to their ranks.

Man United

Maguire is yet to play a single minute for Man United in the 2023-24 campaign.

He has racked up 175 appearances for the club since joining for a reported £80million from Leicester in 2019, but was stripped of the captaincy by Ten Hag earlier this summer.
