Peterborough United defender Charlie O'Connell is in advanced talks with the club over a new deal, sources have told Football Insider.

The 19-year-old's current deal at the League One club expires next summer and they are keen to tie down the centre-back to a new long-term contract.

O'Connell has made three appearances in all competitions for Peterborough so far this season and he is highly regarded by club chiefs.

The youngster is yet to make the bench for a League One fixture this season but has turned out in the League Cup and EFL Trophy this term.

He made his first-team league debut with a seven-minute substitute cameo against Doncaster Rovers at the end of the 2021-22 season.

O'Connell, who can play at centre-back, right-back, and in defensive midfield, had a loan spell at non-league Kettering Town at the start of this year.

The starlet, who joined Peterborough from West Ham as a 16-year-old, signed a contract extension in 2021 after impressing in age-group games.

Ronnie Edwards and Frankie Kent are the first-choice senior centre-back partnership at present - although the former was dismissed in his last League One outing.

O'Connell's versatility could make him a valuable option for the Posh as they seek to return to the Championship following relegation in 2021.
