Elliot Thorpe is signing for Luton Town today after bidding farewell to Tottenham, Football Insider understands.

The Championship club have beaten Cardiff City and Bristol City to the capture of the Wales Under-21 star, who came close to joining Hoffenheim in the summer.

A Luton source has told Football Insider that Thorpe, 20, has undergone a medical and agreed the terms of a contract with the club.

He is expected to put pen to paper today and complete a free transfer.

It comes after Thorpe released a statement on his social media channels in which he bid farewell to Spurs after nine years.

He claimed the "last few weeks have undoubtedly been the hardest of my life" as he desired to sever his ties with his boyhood club to join a club with a clearer route to first-team football.

Luton manager Nathan Jones admitted earlier today his club had an interest in signing Thorpe.

Tottenham had offered Thorpe a new contract to replace his deal which was due to expire at the end of June.

But, as revealed by Football Insider on 28th May, the young midfielder knocked it back in order to join a club where there is a clearer first-team pathway.

The rising star is now eligible to join a new club on a free transfer, absolving the need for any fee or compensation to be paid to his old team.

Thorpe was called up by Wales Under-21s in June after making a big impression for the Spurs Under-23s.

He played 21 times for the Under-23s and most memorably scored twice against Liverpool in April.
