Tottenham are edging closer to tying Toby Alderweireld to a new contract after indications he is keen to commit his long-term future to the club, Football Insider understands.

The defender, 30, is out of contract at the end of the season but is ready to sign an extension after previously being keen to quit White Hart Lane.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider there is now growing confidence that Alderweireld will pen new terms following the unexpected U-turn.

This comes after Football Insider revealed last week Spurs are planning to offer Alderweireld a double-your-money deal that would see his salary soar to £120,000-a-week.

Alderweireld was available for £26million this summer but he surprisingly did not generate enough interest from Europe's elite clubs to persuade him to end his five-year spell at Tottenham.

Talks over a new contract had broken down at the start of last year, which led to the Belgium international being frozen out of the side.

Alderweireld appeared set to run down his deal and leave for a cut-price fee but his relationship with Mauricio Pochettino thawed and he made 45 Premier League and Champions League starts among 50 appearances in all competitions last season.

The former Southampton and Atletico Madrid star has emerged as Spurs' first-choice centre-back this season following the demotion of Jan Vertonghen.

The 30-year-old has started each of Tottenham's three Premier League matches this season alongside Davinson Sanchez in the centre of defence.
