West Ham have made Man City star John Stones their top centre-back target this summer, Football Insider understands.

The east Londoners are looking to recruit a proven performer who can ideally slot into the right-sided central defender position.

A West Ham source has told Football Insider that Moyes has compiled a short list of centre-backs that is headed by 2018 World Cup star Stones.

Man United's Phil Jones and Brighton's Shane Duffy are also on the radar of the Scot although the trio are loan targets rather than being considered for permanent deals.

Moyes has declared during internal recruitment meetings that his first choice is Stones, whose career has stalled at the Etihad Stadium.

The 39-times England cap has two years left on his City contract and is increasingly likely to switch clubs this summer.

It represents the last major chance to recoup much of the £47.5million fee paid in 2016 to Everton that made him then the second-most expensive defender signing in history.

Chelsea are also keeping tabs on Stones - as revealed by Football Insider last month - as they look to solve their own defensive issues.

Stones has been a fringe figure at City all season, despite the loss of Vincent Kompany last summer.

The centre-back has started just two matches for City since the restart and has made just 12 league starts among 24 appearances in all competitions this season.
