Stefan Borson: Savinho had ‘compelling argument’ after Man City deal agreed

Man City have agreed a new deal with Savinho despite the winger nearly joining Tottenham in the summer transfer window.

Pep Guardiola’s side stood firm on their stance that Savinho wasn’t for sale following the interest from Tottenham.

Man City fans called for Savinho to be sold after reports emerged the club were in talks with the Brazil international over a new deal.

However, Savinho has now signed a new contract at the Etihad Stadium until 2031.

Former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson exclusively told Football Insider the 21-year-old will have been demanding he received a contract worthy of a £70million player after Tottenham’s move to sign him was turned down.

Savinho's likely Man City contract demand revealed

Guardiola recently admitted Savinho needs to improve his decision-making if he’s to become one of the world’s best players.

The winger has registered one goal in seven appearances for Man City this season.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider about Savinho’s new contract, Borson said: “Once there is a market value out there of let's say £70million, then the perception by which his contract is looked at changes.

“So he probably says, ‘Well, if your own internal value is that I'm a £70m player in turning down an offer that you got from Spurs, then that means that I should be paid the equivalent of a £70m player as opposed to the deal that I've been on when I was acquired for £30m. So, great you want to keep me, but please can we have another look at the contract’.”

Savinho joined Man City from French side Troyes for around £30m in the summer of 2024.

Guardiola’s side have made it clear the Brazilian is in their long-term plans after deciding to hand him a new deal.

Borson said: “I think it's quite a compelling argument for him and his agent to say ‘You obviously rate me very highly if you're turning down £70m, you therefore obviously want to keep me until at least 2031, and I'm up for that. But I want a contract that's commensurate with it’, and it looks like that's what he's got.”

Man City currently sit fifth in the Premier League table after picking up 13 points from their opening seven games of the season.

However, they are not back in action until 18 October against Everton due to the international break.
