'Stupid money' - Exclusive: McAvennie reacts to big development in Celtic bid to sign Toney

Frank McAvennie

Celtic and West Ham legend Frank McAvennie joined the Football Insider stable in June 2020 and has not disappointed with his own brand of unique punditry. He loves talking football almost as much as he loved scoring goals, and still has close links in the dressing room at Parkhead.

Frank McAvennie insisted that Peterborough's Ivan Toney is overpriced at £9million and was adamant that Celtic would not pay "stupid money" for the striker.

The Hoops legend, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that Neil Lennon does not need another centre-forward if Leigh Griffiths keeps fit.

Peterborough's Director of Football, Barry Fry, warned the Hoops that they are running out of time to sign Toney, 24.

The striker scored 26 goals in 39 appearances for The Posh last season as they narrowly missed out on the League One play-offs.

McAvennie suggested he had doubts over Toney given how many clubs he has already been at despite being relatively young.

"Peterborough want £9million for Toney," he told Football Insider. "That is stupid wanting that kind of money.

"He has been around for a long time and he has been loaned out more times than he cares to remember. When a player has been around, loaned out, it makes you wonder.

"He found a level last year that was great but I just do not think Celtic would pay £9million for him. I think he could come up and do it at Celtic but I just think he is overpriced.

"If Griff keeps fit, he will be back in the fold. £5million would be a great move at a good price."

When speaking on Toney's future last night, Fry told the

: "They are running out of time now. The lad is very close to signing for someone else in the next couple of days.

"Celtic would have been his preferred choice, but they are nowhere near it. I heard from Ivan's agent to say Celtic were coming back... but I haven't heard anything."
