Rangers have opened talks with Brighton as they aim to thrash out a deal to sign Jamie Murphy in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Sky Sports claimed on their live transfer blog on Saturday [08:55AM] that the Light Blues are in discussions with the Premier League side about the forward, but are yet to reach an agreement on a fee.

It is understood that Rangers are very keen on Glasgow-born Murphy, 28, after the Scottish Sun reported that the former Motherwell attacker is open to the idea of returning to Scotland next month.

The report also added that the Light Blues are readying an offer worth £1.2million for Murphy, who can play on the left-wing or as a striker.

He played quite a key role in helping Brighton secure promotion from the Championship last season but has found it hard to get game time in the Premier League.

The ex-Sheffield United forward has made five appearances in the first-team across all competitions this term.

Murphy would be a very good addition to the Rangers squad. He is from Glasgow so will know what it takes to play for one of the Old Firm giants and also had past experience of playing in the Scottish Premiership with 175 appearances in the competition with Motherwell. Rangers' effort to sign Murphy may be due to it being widely reported that bids have been made for Josh Windass. Murphy can play in similar positions to the ex-Accrington Stanley star and it looks as though the pair could be moving clubs for similar fees. Murphy would be a good additions and Mark Allen should be working hard to get this deal over the line.
