Tottenham have prioritised a move to sign a new goalkeeper in the January transfer window, according to their former scout.

Mick Brown, who remains very well-connected at the club and also worked as the chief scout for Man United and Blackburn, exclusively told Football Insider that they are expected to enter the transfer market to help add depth to their defensive options.

Guglielmo Vicario's serious injury blow has forced Fraser Forster into the starting XI, but there is a lack of quality depth behind the 36-year-old.

There is also a feeling that, given his age, Forster cannot be somebody they rely upon for the long-term future and they will look to establish more stability in his position.

Brown has insisted that the arrival of a new goalkeeper will be part of Tottenham's plans to improve their defensive unit as well, after having struggled so far this season.

Ange Postecoglou's side have struggled defensively all season, recording just their fourth league clean sheet of the season in the 5-0 win against Southampton.

Tottenham January transfer priority revealed in new twist

Now, the former scout who has a wealth of experience in top-level player recruitment after over a decade at Man United during their most successful period, has insisted a new goalkeeper has risen to the top of their list of targets.

"It looks like being something they'll prioritise in January," he told Football Insider.

"I think there are probably more important positions to address, like signing a new centre-back, but that's something they want to do.

"All of Tottenham's struggles so far this season have come down to their defensive issues, and I'd include the goalkeeper in that.

"They can go out and beat you 5-0, but they could just as easily lose 5-0.

"So they're going to focus on improving their defensive options and the defensive unit as a whole, perhaps more in terms of depth than in the first team.

"The goalkeeper is very much a part of that, because with Vicario out and Forster getting on a bit, they'll be made to think about the long-term future of the position."
