Tottenham have opened preliminary talks with midfielder Oliver Skipp a new contract, Football Insider has learned.

Spurs have turned their attention to securing the future of the midfielder, 19, after his impressive development in recent months.

A Tottenham source has told Football Insider that the club regard Skipp highly and want to extend his current agreement, which expires next year.

The teenager is regarded as one of the club's three outstanding home-grown stars along with defender Japhet Tanganga and striker Troy Parrott.

Skipp signed his current contract in August 2018 but FA rules for 17-year-old meant it only ran for three years.

He is now able to pen a long-term deal and that is the intention of Tottenham.

Parrott was secured to a new three-year agreement last month, as first revealed by Football Insider, while Tanganga is in advanced talks to join

Jose Mourinho has been impressed by the qualities of Skipp and named him in the Spurs starting XI for the club's two matches before the postponement of football across Britain and Europe.

His development was one reason why Mourinho gave the green light for Victor Wanyama to join Montreal Impact on a free transfer last month.

The Portugese raved about Skipp's "phenomenal" performance after his 120-minute performance in the FA Cup defeat to Norwich City.

Skipp has graduated from the ranks to make 20 senior appearances for the club, eight of which have come this season.
