Tottenham are to open new contract talks with Erik Lamela within the coming weeks, according to a report.

Italian site Transfer Market Web claims Spurs want to tie Lamela down to an extended deal beyond 2018, which is when his current agreement expires.

It is said that negotiations will begin imminently as the London giants prepare to offer the Argentina attacking midfielder a deal that runs until 2020.

The 24-year-old has recently said that he would be delighted to sign a contract extension and sees his long-term future with the club.

"I would like to [sign a new deal] because I am very happy here. I feel part of this team which is improving,” Lamela told the Evening Standard. “I have a group of excellent team-mates and I feel very good around them.

"It would make me happy to play for more years in this shirt. Will I be the next to sign? Let's hope so. At the moment I am thinking only of playing and about Saturday's game against Leicester."

Spurs have managed to secure the futures of five senior players in recent months, with Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Eric Dier, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen all agreeing new contracts.

Lamela has had a solid start to the new season, scoring two goals and supplying seven assists in his first 14 games.

The winger is a regular starter under manager Mauricio Pochettino, but supporters have criticised him for failing to consistently deliver the goods.

In total, Lamela has made 121 appearances for Spurs since his arrival in 2013 and scored 19 goals and supplied 31 assists.
