Alan Hutton has insisted Stefan de Vrij would be an upgrade on Clement Lenglet at Tottenham.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Spurs and Aston Villa right-back said that signing De Vrij would be a boost for Antonio Conte.

Multiple clubs have enquired about the Inter Milan centre-back whose contract expires in the summer.

Conte has already spoken to the Holland international about a potential January move when he could be available for substantially less than the £40millin valuation of last year.

The Spurs boss has been a huge admirer of the defender and was keen to sign him earlier this year.

When asked if De Vrij would be an upgrade on loanee Clement Lenglet, Hutton told Football Insider: "I think so.

"That has obviously been the guy that Conte has wanted for a long time. He has worked under him, they have won the league together in Italy. To bring him in would be good for Conte because he has been trying for a long time.

"I think it is an upgrade on what they already have there in Lenglet. I think he is a better option.

"He is used to playing that formation so ticks all the boxes. I think if they could get that over the line it would definitely improve them as a whole."
