Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy is closing in on the appointment of a new chief scout at the club, according to a report.

The Mail claim the long-standing Spurs chief has lined up recruitment specialist Steve Hitchen for a return to White Hart Lane.

It is said that Levy has moved to appoint Hitchen to for the second time after he was one of Tottenham's leading scouts during the Harry Redknapp era.

The deal is all but done for Hitchen to have a second spell at the north Londoners as the scouting department undergoes a considerable refurbishment.

Head of recruitment Paul Mitchell is serving his notice period after quitting the club, while former chief scout Ian Broomfield left the club last month.

Mitchell was reportedly unhappy at the signing of Vincent Janssen from AZ Alkmaar last summer after Levy had failed to push through the signing of his own recommendation Michy Batshuayi, who joined Chelsea in a £32million transfer.

The Mail report that Hitchen, who used to be on the Liverpool coaching staff, played an instrumental role in bringing former Premier League sensation Luis Suarez to England.

He was also involved in bringing Real Madrid's Luka Modric to White Hart Lane from Croatian outfit Dinamo Zagreb in the summer of 2008.

Hitchen is set to replace Broomfield as the club's senior scout rather than take on the most senior recruitment role at Tottenham.

The club are planning to appoint a replacement for Mitchell and the interview process to find a replacement is close to completion.
