Chelsea midfielder Marco van Ginkel has joined PSV Eindhoven on loan for the rest of the season, the Dutch club announced on Monday night.

The 23-year-old's season-long spell at Stoke has been cut short following the club's £18.3million record signing of Giannelli Imbula from Porto.

Van Ginkel signed a season-long loan from Chelsea last summer and played 21 times for Mark Hughes' team.

But the central midfielder, who went out on loan to AC Milan last season, has now transferred to the Eredivisie leaders PSV.

Chelsea see a future for Van Ginkel at Stamford Bridge and are not keen on letting him leave on a permanent transfer.

Van Ginkel started his career in Holland at Vitesse Arnhem before joining Chelsea in 2013 after making 111 appearances for the Dutch club before the age of 20.

However, the midfielder's progress was interrupted after he tore a cruciate ligament in a League Cup game against Swindon just two months after joining the west London club and was ruled out for seven months.
