Mark Warburton may be forced to cash in on Josh Windass in the January transfer window to fund an overhaul of the Rangers squad, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun claim Newcastle and Derby are keen on signing midfielder Windass when the winter window opens next month.

It is said that the Championship duo are weighing up bids for the 22-year-old just months after he completed a summer move from Accrington and signed a four-year contract.

Warburton has his own plans to strengthen a Rangers squad that has had a mixed return to the Scottish top flight after four years in the wilderness.

Interest in Windass provides the manager with a transfer riddle, as a sale could enable him to bring in more than one new signing in January.

Warburton has publicly targeted a dynamic midfield signing to lift a team that has been decimated by the loss of Niko Kranjcar to injury for the rest of the season, as well as to the much-publicised departure of Joey Barton.

Windass began the season on the sidelines due to injury and is currently out with a hamstring injury but he earned rave reviews during his 12 games for the Scottish club.

The midfielder scored one goal and supplied three assists and brought some much-needed energy and mobility to a one-paced side.

Warburton was closely watched by English clubs last season after an excellent campaign for Accrington in League Two, where he scored 17 goals and supplied seven assists last season.

In other Rangers transfer news, the club have made a decision on a 23-year-old loan as they line up midfield reinforcements.
