Wrexham share Premier League statement as stunning deal confirmed
Wrexham have enjoyed a meteoric rise over the past few years as they aim to become a Premier League club in the near future.
Wrexham are majority owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac (formerly McElhenney), who have helped the club achieve three successive promotions from the National League to the Championship.
Phil Parkinson has also played a key role in that success, with the Red Dragons’ manager overseeing all three of those promotions at the Stok Cae Ras, also known as the Racecourse Ground.
Their rise through the EFL has seen Wrexham recently valued at up to £350million as they continue to attract interest from investors.
It has now been confirmed a new investor has decided to get on board at the Racecourse.
How much did Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac pay to buy Wrexham?
Reynolds and Mac purchased Wrexham in February 2021, with the deal seeing the Hollywood stars invest £2m into the Welsh club.
It was later announced in October 2024 the Allyn family, which has a net worth of more than £1.5billion, had bought a minority stake in the Red Dragons.
There has now been a fresh update provided on Wrexham’s ownership situation after another deal has been agreed at the Racecourse.
Wrexham confirmed on Monday (8 December) Apollo Sports Capital has purchased a minority stake in the club.
Apollo, which has more than £675bn worth of assets under management, became the majority owners of La Liga giants Atletico Madrid last month.
In a joint statement, Reynolds and Mac said: “From day one, we wanted to build a sustainable future for Wrexham Association Football Club. And to do it with a little heart and humour.
“The dream has always been to take this club to the Premier League while staying true to the town. Growth like that takes world-class partners who share our vision and ambition, and Apollo absolutely does.”
The Apollo deal provides Wrexham with significantly more spending power and undoubtedly strengthens their chances of reaching the Premier League, with the January transfer window opening in three weeks’ time.
Wrexham spent around £30m on new signings over the summer, while Parkinson is expected to be backed again next month.
The Red Dragons currently sit 12th in the Championship table, but they are just two points outside of the play-offs after 19 games.
Wrexham slammed after off-field controversy
Despite the positivity around the Racecourse, Wrexham have faced criticism after a controversy has emerged off the field.
UK government state aid disclosures have revealed (via The Guardian) the club have received £18m in non-repayable grants from the Welsh government through the local council.
The money has been provided to help fund the new Kop Stand, with the redevelopment work starting last week in North Wales.
The project is set to be completed during the 2026-27 season and increase the Racecourse’s capacity to just over 18,000.
Former Everton CEO Keith Wyness told Football Insider Wrexham’s agreement with the Welsh government is “absolutely despicable”.
