Man City could attempt to persuade Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi to make the move to England in January, sources have told Football Insider.

Speaking on the latest edition of Football Insider's Inside Track podcast, senior correspondent Pete O'Rourke revealed that City are set to prioritise the signing of a central midfielder, with the 25-year-old among their targets.

Zubimendi had turned down a move to Liverpool in the summer in favour of remaining at Real Sociedad despite a deal having been agreed between the clubs.

City's interest comes following a serious injury blow to Rodri, sustained in the 2-2 draw with Arsenal earlier this season, which has left them short of options at the base of their midfield.

Mateo Kovacic has filled in as a short-term replacement for the Spaniard, but there is a growing feeling that they will need to upgrade the position.

As a result, they have begun compiling a shortlist of options, and Zubimendi's name is one that has come up in discussions behind the scenes.

Man City plot move to sign Liverpool target Martin Zubimendi

Zubimendi has made 15 appearances for Real Sociedad so far this season, starting all but one, and remains a crucial part of their midfield.

He has spent his whole career with the club, making over 200 appearances for the senior side, which played a part in his decision to turn down Liverpool.

Having lost Mikel Merino to Arsenal during the summer, Sociedad were reluctant to see their midfield further weakened, but Man City could now be set to test their resolve.

Having qualified for the Europa League by finishing 6th last season, the Spanish side have now dropped to 11th in the table, and the opportunity to join City may prove tempting.

Pep Guardiola is understood to be a big fan of the midfielder, and the opportunity to work under the legendary boss is also seen as a potential draw.

It remains to be seen whether Zubimendi would be open to a move to the Premier League, but there is a belief at Man City that he could be persuaded if they decide he is their top choice for the role.
