Trippier could help Newcastle secure two 'huge' signings after Ornstein update - pundit

Diego Carlos and Sven Botman’s arrival “would be huge” for Newcastle United, according to Kevin Phillips.

The former Premier League striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, is confident the pair could build a solid backline at St. James’ Park alongside Kieran Trippier.

On Friday, Newcastle confirmed the signing of Trippier from Atletico Madrid.

According to The Athletic‘s David Ornstein (7 January), the Magpies are now pushing to seal deals for Sevilla’s Diego Carlos and Lille’s Sven Botman.

The centre-halves will each command fees of close to £30million or more.

When asked by Football Insider for his thoughts on the targets, Phillips said: “It doesn’t take Einstein to realise that the back four needs to be addressed.

“We all know the qualities Kieran Trippier will bring.

“To add two centre-halves into the equation would be huge. If they had the three of them it would give the rest of the team a platform to build from. To stay in the league they need to be defensively solid.

“It is always a slight gamble when you bring in two players who have not played in the Premier League. But, in Kieran Trippier they would have someone next to them who has vast experience. He would be a massive help for them.

“It would be a baptism of fire, no doubt. They would have no time to settle. They’d have to hit the ground running.

“It would be a great start to the window for Newcastle if they get them both, that’s for sure.”
