'Unbelievable' - Exclusive: Ex-Spur stunned after Mourinho's comments to Sky

Michael Brown admits it is “unbelievable” that Jose Mourinho is still trying to find his best starting XI at Tottenham.

The former Spurs midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes tactical changes and the congested fixture list means the Portuguese boss is yet to settle on his favoured line up.

As quoted by Sky Sports after the win over Newcastle, Mourinho questioned why he was constantly being asked about his team selection when the likes of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp are not.

Brown admits he is stunned that the Spurs boss is struggling to find a settled side and suggests there are a number of factors contributing to the manager’s headache.

Brown told Football Insider: “Mourinho’s come out this week and said about his team selection, why journalists don’t ask other people – it was a good win to ease the pressure but he’s still trying to find his team, isn’t it?

“I just can’t find out what their settled side is and I keep saying the same thing. It’s unbelievable, isn’t it? I don’t know if he is closer to finding out. I think sometimes it’s tactical, I think sometimes it’s the run of games, the loading.

“It’s changing people’s opinions, you’re getting judged against different teams. I don’t think you’ve got much choice so I don’t think you’re getting a true reflection of who he wants. The thing you can say is the likes of Alderweireld, Vertonghen – why weren’t they playing?”

Alderweireld has now started Spurs’ last four games but Mourinho has rotated between Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen in the other central defender’s spot.

The Tottenham boss has also regularly made changes in attack since the Premier League restart, with Lucas Moura, Heung-min Son, Erik Lamela and Steven Bergwijn rotating around Harry Kane.

In other Tottenham news, Harry Kane has been tipped for a shock exit after a major development.
