Man United remain in hot pursuit of Tottenham goal king Harry Kane despite extending Edinson Cavani's contract, Football Insider has learned.

The Premier League giants announced on Monday night that the Uruguay star, 34, has agreed a one-year contract extension running until 2022.

That has led to suggestions, including from Gary Neville, that United will call a halt to their plans to bring in a world-class centre-forward this summer.

But a United source has told Football Insider that is not the case and the club are very much in for a central spearhead out of the elite bracket.

Kane, 27, is a firm target for the 20-times champions and they are plotting a huge bid even though a pursuit of a player Tottenham value at over £100million is fraught with complications.

He had a poor match as the Londoners were comprehensively beaten by Marcelo Bielsa's side but that will not put off the Manchester club.

United are delighted to have tied Cavani down but will have to carefully manage his game time.

They want Kane, or a striker in that bracket, to lead the line as the club's coaches believes the likes of Antony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Marcus Greenwood are more effective in wide positions.
