New West Ham signing Craig Dawson is exactly what the club needs, according to Danny Mills.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, the former Leeds United and England full-back believes the defender possesses a “calm” at the back that West Ham are crying out for.

The Hammers confirmed on Monday that the 30-year-old had joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Championship side Watford.

Dawson said after joining the club: “I can’t wait to get started and share my experience. We’ve got a lot of experienced lads here anyway and to be joining this group of players is an exciting prospect, so I can’t wait.”

And Mills believes it is his experience that makes him a “great” squad player.

Asked by Football Insider whether Dawson was a good signing for West Ham, he said: “He’s very, very experienced.

“He’s obviously got quality as well. He’s a great player to have in your squad.

“He’s not going to cause any issues, he’s reliable. You know what you’re going to get and that’s what West Ham need.

“They need a bit of calm, sometimes back there so they can build a decent platform off the back of that.

“I think that’s a very shrewd signing.”

The defender has vast Premier League experience having played 182 top-flight games for the Hornets and West Brom.

Last season he played 34 times in the league, including 26 starts, for Watford but his efforts were not enough to prevent them from being relegated.
